Identifying opportunities

This is a huge market. How do I find out what the government wants to buy?

Short answer: First, turn to easily available public, free online and other resources for the rudimentary answers. It is usually advisable to also have more sophisticated, fee-for-service resources when you find a source that best meets your specific needs.

These issues and others are discussed in The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Getting Government Contracts.

Chapter 4, “Collecting Important Market Data” discusses a step-by-step way of finding out just what government wants to buy. For example, on the Federal Business Opportunities website (www.FedBizOpps.gov), government buyers announce their needs, wants, and business opportunities. Government agencies may also make independent contract announcements.

After you have mastered how to use the free and easily available information of market targets, you may want to invest in third-party help. The marketplace provides an array of fee-for-service assistance in identifying sales opportunities.
